Cl. 2. The attending physicians and surgeons shall direct the mode of treatment of the patients. They shall give the necessary orders and instructions to the House Staff, and, when noticed, make complaints or criticisms as to nurses, in writing to the Training School Committee. They shall also make in writing to the Superintendent any complaints as to behavior of orderlies or the character or quantity of food for patients. They shall in no case complain direct to the nurses, but the attention of the Superintendent, or Directress of Nurses, may be called to any irregularity observed.
Cl. 3. No capital operation upon any ward patient shall be authorized by any member of the Visiting Staff on duty until after the approval thereof shall have been obtained from one of the other members of the Consulting and Visiting Staff.
Cl. 4. In the absence from duty of one of the attending staff, his place shall in no instance be filled except by another member of the Consulting and Visiting Staff.
Cl. 5. No attending physician or surgeon shall receive any fee or pecuniary compensation from any non-paying patient, who comes under his charge in the free wards. This rule is not intended to apply to patients occupying private rooms, or classed as pay patients.
ARTICLE XX.—House Staff.
Clause 1. The House Staff shall consist of a Medical or a Surgical Interne, or both, at the discretion of the Board of Governors, to serve for one year.
Cl. 2. No person shall be eligible to a position on the House Staff unless he shall have attained the age of twenty-one years and shall have graduated from a reputable medical college.
Cl. 3. Whenever a vacancy exists in the House Staff, other than by expiration of term of service, the Chief of Staff shall notify the Committee on Examination, who shall recommend suitable parties to the Executive Committee from which said committee shall fill the vacancy.
Cl. 4. Before any regular appointment on the House Staff is made, the applicant shall sign an agreement in the following
