Dean Simmons Smith, Class of 1948
Dean Simmons Smith, age 89, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2017. She is preceded in death by her husband, Warren Eston Smith; parents, Carl and Lucile Simmons, and brother, Carl Simmons, Jr.
Dean is survived by sons, Charles Smith (Susie) of Knoxville and Brian Smith of Loganville, Georgia; grandsons, Thomas Smith (Jamie) of Knoxville, Garrison Smith (Emily) of Decatur, Georgia; granddaughter, Bethany Smith of Grayson, Georgia; great-grandsons, Carter Smith, Avery Smith; great-granddaughter, Caroline Smith; sister, Evelyn Simmons and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith was born in Staunton, Virginia on June 29, 1928. Upon finishing high school at the age of 16 she left Staunton to attend nursing school at Knoxville General Hospital in Knoxville. During her career that followed, she worked as a registered nurse in hospitals in Knoxville, Memphis, Johnson City, Richmond, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to her career as an RN, she managed a home and family where she devoted her love and time to her husband and their two sons. After officially retiring and returning to Knoxville, she volunteered with Baptist Hospital (Tennova) in Farragut where she brightened the day for employees and customers alike by serving in the hospital’s gift shop. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Bearden.
A Celebration of Dean’s Life will be held at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:30a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made out to Shannondale, with “Chaplains Fund” in the memo line, and sent to Administration Offices, Shannondale, 801 Vanosdale Road, Knoxville, TN 37909.
