Important Regional Nursing History Work Published in 2024
Dr. Sharon Loury, a Professor of Nursing at East Tennessee State University, completed an introductory volume entitled Appalachian Nursing: A History, 1890-1960 in the Fall of 2024.
The book delves into many important aspects of the development of nursing theory and practice during the period when trained nurses were ingrained as healthcare professionals in the Southern Appalachian region. Much of the history of nursing in this region connects to Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing.
In her research, Dr. Loury discovered relationships between the KGH program and national hospitals and advanced schools. Loury also documented connections from KGH to several training programs, advanced practice organizations, and the statewide nursing association. Billie McNamara, KGH Alumni historian, provided crucial information about nursing education, extracurricular activities, and a variety of other topics that added value to the Dr. Loury’s study.
