MUNCY, DR. ESTLE PERSHING – 89, passed away at his home in Jefferson City, Thursday, December 20, 2007. He was born April 9, 1918 in Tazewell, TN. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, TN. Dr. Muncy graduated from Lincoln Memorial University and UT Medical School. After an internship at Knoxville General Hospital he did residencies in cardiology and internal medicine at Methodist Hospital, Dallas, TX and Tufts University, Boston, MA. He served 2-1/2 years in the US Army during World War II, 22 months of which were spent in the Pacific Theater. He was in medical practice in Jefferson City for forty years. Dr. Muncy was active in civic and community affairs throughout his life. He served as a Jefferson City Councilman, President of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, President of the Tennessee Heart Association, first and fifth President of the Carson-Newman College Community Council, among many other activities. After he retired, he and his wife, Jean traveled extensively throughout the world and to all fifty states. Dr. Muncy is the author of two books and numerous book chapters and articles which were published in various journals newsletters, and newspapers. He was an accomplished photographer. He had a lifelong interest in history and was the official Jefferson County Historian from 1995 to 2006. Special honors which Dr. Muncy has received include Jefferson Award, Covenant Health’s Platinum Award, Civitan Award for Outstanding Service, Modern Woodmen of American Award for Community Service, induction into Lincoln Memorial University’s Literal Hall of Fame and Professional Hall of Fame, Rotary International Award, Humanitarian Award from Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authorit y, Commendation Award from Governor Sundquist. He is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care. Dr. Muncy was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Media Muncy , sister, Edna Lester and infant brother, Leslie Howard Muncy. He is survived by his wife, Jean Hayter Muncy; son, James Muncy of Jefferson City; sons and daughters in law, Robert and Joyce Muncy, Louisville, KY and Estle P. Muncy, II and Maria, Knoxville; daughters and sons in law, Ann and Bill Fischer, Louisville, TN and Dorothy and Stephen Kuffler, Richmond, VA; grandsons, Robert Muncy, Ben Fischer, Robert Longmire, Noah Muncy, Zac Muncy and Andrew Muncy; granddaughters, Mary Muncy, Laura Schmidt, Rachael Muncy and Jacquelyn Muncy; two great grandchildren, John Magill Schmidt and Ruthanne Elaine Fischer; brother, Glen Muncy ; brother and sister in law, Dr. Lon and Jacqulyn Muncy, Winter Haven, FL; sister and brother in law, June and Pierce McCoy, Beavercreek, OH; and many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Saturday December 22 at Fielden Funeral Home, New Market, TN, followed immediately by a memorial service at Fielden Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Dampier officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lincoln Memorial University 6965 Cumberland Gap Parkway, Harrogate, TN 37752.
