Elsie Cole Lewis, Class of 1941
CHARLOTTE – Elsie passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014. She would have been 94 on her birthday. Elsie will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Born on July 9, 1920, in Abingdon, Virginia, Elsie was a daughter of Kemp Keys Cole and Verna Lou Barker Cole. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Lewis; her brother, William King Cole; and sisters, Martha Susan Cole Miller and Glena May Cole Hall. Elsie was a dedicated nurse, beginning her career as a private nurse. After her move to North Carolina, she became nurse in charge at the new Gaston Memorial Hospital in the 1940’s. She eventually moved to Charlotte. Elsie loved all animals, antiquing, reading, gardening flowers and vegetables, visiting the family farm, a good nap, helping others, long conversations and cooking for her many friends. She was smart, vivacious, in charge, making friends right up to her last days. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 24, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Harry and Bryant, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 26th at 1:00 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, 1019 East Valley Drive, Bristol, VA 24201.
