Wolfenbarger’s Cafe
One of the favorite off-campus hangouts for KGH nursing students in the 1940’s and 1950’s was actually deemed “off-limits” by the school’s administrators.
Knox County Coroner, Sidney Wolfenbarger, was the proprietor of Wolfenbarger’s Cafe, located at 989 North Central Avenue. “Wolfie’s” was the closest place for students to get such treats as fried bologna sandwiches. Nursing students could exchange bus tokens It was also a place to meet single young men.
KGH Alumnae have shared many stories about “Wolfie’s,” and we will post them here as time permits. If you have a story to share, please e-mail us!
The restaurant is gone now, but below is an interactive Google view of the location. Click the arrows on the image for a virtual tour of the corner.
